| | | Cordoba is located in the south of Spain, in the province of Cordoba, which forms part of the regional autonomy of Andalusia. The city sits on the bank of the Guadalquivir River, and is famous for its great mosque (La Mezquita). The city is filled with beautiful courtyards, balconies dripping with flowers, and a labyrinth of narrow winding streets, making Córdoba a captivating and attractive city. It was once the largest city in Western Europe and for three centuries it was the centre of the Moorish Empire.

La Mezquita is the most important monument in Cordoba, and is the third largest mosque in the world. However, Islamic rites are no longer practiced there, and have not been since 1236, after which point a Gothic cathedral was built within it by the Christians. Close to the mosque is the old medieval quarter of Cordoba, once the home of the Jewish community known as La Juderia, which is a labyrinth of narrow streets and whitewashed houses draped in flowers.
Cordoba is very proud of its attractive city, and each year a competition is held in which home-owners compete for the prize awarded to the most beautifully decorated patio.
As well as the unique mosque-cathedral, Cordoba has other treasures including the Alcazar, or Fortress, built by the Christians in 1328, and the Calahorra Fort, originally built by the Arabs, which guards the Roman Bridge, found on the far side of the river from the La Mezquita.
The Archeological Museum is situated in a Renaissance palace, found over the ruins of the Roman Theatre, and features Prehistoric, Roman, Visigoth, Moslem and Renaissance artefacts.
Shopping opportunities in Cordoba are plentiful, with the most popular items including local decorative pottery, leather work and jewellery from the Jewish Quarter.
Cordobas summer fair takes place in the last week of May, and is a great opportunity to see the local people dress in traditional costume and dance and sing flamenco during the day and late into the night. During the rest of the year, you can visit the Tablao Cardenal located in Calle Torrijos, next to the Tourist Office, to enjoy traditional flamenco.
For the golf enthusiast there are a few local courses to choose from, such as the Club de Campo Golf, located in the hills of Serrania de Cordoba, just eight kilometres north of Cordoba city, or Pozoblanco Golf, situated to the east of the city.
